Playing at CUT DC by Wolfgang Puck, Georgetown
A New Musical Habitat: CUT DC by Wolfgang Puck
One of the things I like most about being a jazz pianist is that I never know where the piano will take me. LA called the other day. I was like, “seriously, you don’t have better pianists in your city?”
I’ve played wineries, country clubs, historic inns, wedding venues, restaurants, homes, patios, balconies and even an alpaca auction. And this piano jazziness has brought me to CUT DC by Wolfgang Puck — smack in the middle of Georgetown. I'm genuinely excited about this.
For those who haven't been, CUT sits inside the Rosewood Hotel just a few steps from the C&O Canal. Georgetown has always felt like one of those neighborhoods where every building has a story and every side street seems to be hiding something interesting. CUT fits right in. It's refined without being stuffy, upscale yet accessible.
Naturally the room has a piano, which is fortunate, because that’s where I come in.
Catch me there on upcoming Friday or Saturday nights. You’ll get mostly jazz standards, but a few drinks in and you’ll hear and Elton John tune or two. So come out. Catch some jazz. Enjoy the evening.
A good night at the piano isn't necessarily one where everyone stops and listens. Sometimes it's the night when someone leaves feeling a little happier without quite knowing why. Sometimes it's the moment a familiar melody drifts across the room and causes a guest to smile. Sometimes it's just creating a space where people can enjoy being where they are.
CUT feels like exactly the sort of place where those moments can happen.
I can't help but appreciate one final connection. CUT DC is located inside the Rosewood Hotel, whose New York sibling, The Carlyle, is home to the legendary Bemelmans Bar. For generations, some of the city's finest pianists have played beneath those famous murals, providing the soundtrack for countless New York evenings. I'm certainly not suggesting Georgetown and the Upper East Side are interchangeable, but it's fun to know that somewhere in the Rosewood family tree there's a piano bar with a history that every jazz pianist can admire.
Meet me at DC’s Bemelmans.
