Drum Orpheum on Friday

From the Drum Orpheum email:

Maddy Curtis & Caleb Nei
Friday, August 21st 8pm

Maddy and Caleb have on and off been making music together for over 15 years now -- whenever they have the off chance since they have different home bases. What they create is an intimate and intentional musical experience for their listeners as they delve into standards (beloved & deep cuts!) as well as Maddy's own jazz originals.

Maddy Curtis (vocals, ukulele) is an award-winning singer whose tone and phrasing harken back to the great jazz and old Hollywood vocalists of yesteryear like Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, and Doris Day. Critics have described her performances as "hauntingly beautiful" (DC Metro Theatre Arts) and "soulful beyond her years" (Simon Cowell, American Idol Season 9). And most recently, Richmond's Auricular described Maddy as "a soulful vocalist who brings a retro-jazz sound that feels like it stepped right out of the World War II era".

Caleb Nei (pianist) spends most of his evenings playing piano somewhere in the greater Northern Virginia area. He provides music in solo, duo, trio and quartet configurations for more than 200 events each year. His every Tuesday and Thursday night gig with bassist Kevin Johnson at Travinia Italian Kitchen consistently draws a diverse crowd of jazz enthusiasts.
